Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about booking a guided fly fishing trip in New Hampshire's White Mountains
Trip Planning & Booking
- How far in advance should I book?
- I recommend booking 2-4 weeks in advance, especially during peak season (May-October). However, I sometimes have last-minute availability, so don't hesitate to call even if your trip is coming up soon.
- What's your cancellation policy?
- Cancellations made 7+ days in advance receive a full refund. Cancellations within 7 days of your trip forfeit the deposit. If I need to cancel due to dangerous weather or water conditions, you'll receive a full refund or we can reschedule.
- Can I book a trip as a gift?
- Absolutely! Gift certificates are available for any amount. Just give me a call and I'll set you up with a certificate that can be emailed or printed.
- What if the weather is bad?
- Light rain is fine - fish often feed well in drizzly conditions. However, if conditions become unsafe (lightning, flooding, extreme cold), I'll call you to reschedule or offer a full refund.
Experience Level & Skills
- Do I need fly fishing experience?
- Not at all! I love working with beginners and first-timers. I'll teach you everything you need to know, from casting basics to reading the water.
- I'm an experienced angler - will I still benefit from a guide?
- Definitely. Local knowledge makes a huge difference. I can put you on productive water you might not find on your own.
- Can kids come on a trip?
- Yes! I welcome families and kids as young as 8 years old. The Saco River is particularly great for families.
- What's the maximum group size?
- I typically take 1-2 anglers for the best experience. I can accommodate up to 3 anglers total for an additional fee.
Equipment & Gear
- What equipment do you provide?
- I provide all fly fishing equipment including rods, reels, flies, and terminal tackle. For wading trips, I also have waders and boots available in most sizes.
- Can I use my own equipment?
- Absolutely! If you have your own rod and gear you're comfortable with, you're welcome to use it.
- What should I wear?
- Dress in layers appropriate for the weather. Avoid cotton - it stays wet and cold. I'll provide waders and boots for wading trips.
- What should I bring?
- Bring sunscreen, polarized sunglasses (crucial for seeing fish!), water, and any snacks or medications you need. On full-day trips, I provide lunch and beverages.
Fishing Licenses & Regulations
- Do I need a fishing license?
- Yes, everyone 16 and older needs a valid New Hampshire fishing license. You can purchase one online at the NH Fish & Game website.
- Are we required to catch and release?
- It depends on the water. Some of our waters have catch-and-release regulations, while others allow you to keep fish within the legal limits.
Trip Details
- What's included in a full-day vs half-day trip?
- Half-day trips are 4 hours of fishing time. Full-day trips are 8 hours and include lunch, beverages, and more time to explore different techniques and locations.
- Do you provide lunch?
- Yes, lunch and beverages are included on all full-day trips.
- Where do we meet?
- I provide transportation to and from the fishing locations. We'll arrange a convenient meeting spot when you book.
- What time do trips start?
- Start times vary by season and which species we're targeting. Generally, we start in the early morning (6-7 AM).
Success & Expectations
- Will I catch fish?
- While I can't guarantee fish (they are wild animals after all!), I do my absolute best to put you on productive water. The majority of my trips result in multiple catches.
- What's the biggest fish I might catch?
- Wild brook trout typically range 6-12 inches. Brown trout and landlocked salmon can exceed 20 inches. Pike can be 25-35 inches or more.
- Will you take photos?
- Absolutely! I bring a camera on all trips and love capturing your catches and the beautiful scenery. I'll email you photos after the trip at no charge.
